Significance of Ganesh Chaturthi

Rituals and Celebrations

  1. Ganesh Sthapana (Idol Installation): Devotees bring home clay idols of Ganesha, decorate pandals and set up altars with flowers, lamps and offerings.
  2. Pran Pratishtha: Priests or family members perform rituals to invoke the divine presence in the idol with Vedic mantras.
  3. Shodashopchar Puja: Sixteen types of pujas that include offering flowers, durva, fruits, sweets (especially modaks), incense and lamps.
  4. Aarti and Bhajan: Aarti is done every morning and evening for 10 days, and family, friends, and neighbors come together to join in.
  5. Special Dishes: Modaks, laddoos, poha, sweets made of coconut and festive dishes are prepared as offerings.
  6. Visarjan: On the last day, people immerse the idols in rivers, lakes, or other water bodies while chanting, "Ganpati Bappa Morya, Pudhchya Varshi Lavkar Ya" which means "Hail Lord Ganesha, come back soon next year."
